Two months of research, road trips and new words

Tere! My name is Melvin, I study political science at the University of Bamberg in Germany, and from August to October 2026 I spent two months as a research intern at the Institute of Baltic Studies in Tartu.

How I ended up here is quite simple. When I was looking for an internship, I typed little more than “internship Baltics” into a search engine, and IBS came up with a detailed page about its internship programme. A few months later, on 7 August, I landed in Tallinn and took the bus straight from the airport to Tartu.

Working at IBS

Research at IBS felt real from day one. My mentor Kats Kivistik introduced me to the institute’s ongoing projects, and I chose to focus on migration and integration.

I spent most of my time working with two datasets, the Estonian Integration Monitoring and a survey of people with undetermined citizenship in Estonia. I ran analyses, went through the literature, identified research gaps and developed ideas for new research projects.

We worked regular hours in the office on Lai Street, and what I liked most was the exchange with my colleagues. I could discuss ideas and results with them at any time, and I was trusted to shape my own work.

The team also looked after me far beyond the office. Colleagues helped me plan my free time, invited me to do sports together and even took me along on the office retreat at the coast. For an intern, that is anything but a given.

Tartu through German eyes

Coming from Germany, some things in Tartu felt foreign and others surprisingly familiar. The most foreign was the language. Estonian has 14 grammatical cases, no grammatical gender and no future tense, so a German speaker has very little to hold on to.

My vocabulary rarely went beyond tere, aitäh and palun, which mean hello, thank you and please. Every now and then, though, a word sounded familiar. A chair is a tool and a potato is a kartul, both borrowed from German long ago. In everyday life, language was never a problem anyway, because almost everyone I met spoke excellent English.

The familiar part was history. For centuries the city was known in German as Dorpat, and when the university reopened in 1802, German was its language of teaching. Its first rector after the reopening, Georg Friedrich Parrot, still looks down from a relief on the Angel’s Bridge on Toome Hill, the park above the old town.

What surprised me most was how digital everyday life is, even in a city of this size. I paid by card everywhere, signed documents online, and parcels went to automated lockers that are open around the clock, which is perfect when you live in an Airbnb without a mailbox. For a town the size of Tartu, the range of delivery services and apps was striking, more than I am used to from much larger German cities. And wherever I went, I was received warmly and made to feel at home.

Tartu is above all a student city, and you feel it everywhere. With a population of around 100,000, it is Estonia’s second city, yet the University of Tartu draws students from across the whole country, so a large share of all Estonian students end up in this one place. When the semester starts in September, the town fills up and the energy changes almost overnight. My stay also overlapped with the autumn edition of the Tartu Student Days, the largest student festival in the Baltics. For a week in late September, the city was full of concerts, sports competitions and quirky events, and I joined several of them.

Weekends on the road

Estonia is small and easy to travel, so I spent almost every weekend somewhere new.

Tallinn was the obvious first stop. Its medieval old town looks like a film set, yet a modern, busy capital starts just around the corner.

Pärnu, the country’s summer capital, gave me a long sandy beach and a relaxed seaside atmosphere.

Elva is a small town surrounded by forests and lakes. It is only a short train ride from Tartu and perfect for a day outdoors.

Narva impressed me most. On one side of the river stands Hermann Castle, on the other the Russian fortress of Ivangorod, and the town itself is mostly Russian-speaking. Standing there, I understood the questions of language, citizenship and belonging from my research better than any dataset could explain them.

Together with the team retreat at the coast, these trips showed me how different Estonia can look within just a few hours of travel.

Aitäh, IBS

Two months went by far too quickly. I left Tartu with a manuscript, new methodological skills and a much deeper understanding of Estonia than any textbook could have given me. Above all, I left with the memory of a team that made me feel welcome from the very first day.

A big aitäh to Kats and everyone at IBS. If you are thinking about an internship here, my advice is simple. Do it!

Illustration: Ardi Sažko

Tere!
