Human security and resilience
This research area focuses on the security of the individual and the community, namely the response, adaptability, and development of people, institutions and systems during crises. Security is a wider term than military defence, focusing rather on human security, i.e. the notion that national and international security relies on the wellbeing and readiness of the individual as well.
We analyse how domestic security, and societal resilience and coherence are impacted by the current era of cluster crises, which is characterised by remilitarisation, the decline of democracy, environmental crises and deepening geopolitical tensions. Our focus is on crisis preparedness, climate and environmental security and barring and assessing the impact of disinformation and polarisation.
With our studies, we create knowledge and solutions that help policy makers, local governments, individuals and communities increase their resilience. For this, we have strong interdisciplinary competence, experience with international cooperation, and working relationships with ministries, universities, and thinktanks.
Previously, we have assessed the readiness of local governments to provide psychosocial crisis support, studied and improved the crisis preparedness of people, developed practical solutions for strengthening food security and climate resilience, and creating interventions to stop the spread of misinformation.
