Johann Erik is an analyst at IBS since 2026. He is familiar with both qualitative and quantitative research methods and his main areas of interest are climate policy and security.
Johann Erik has a Bachelor’s degree from the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies at the University of Tartu. In his thesis, he focused on the connection between the openness of countries’ economies and the carbon footprint. He obtained his Master’s degree from KU Leuven in Belgium in international politics. In his thesis, he studied the changing role of the European Commission in EU defense and security politics since the start of the Ukrainian war. He has also participated in a training at the Estonian School of Diplomacy, collaborated with the NGO Mondo, and participated in the World Federation of Model United Nations’ international simulation in New York.
In addition to political studies, he is interested in history, theatre and travel. During the summer, he can be spotted rowing on the River Emajõgi.
