Migration and integration

Migration and integration has been one of IBS’ main research areas since 2007. Since then, we have carried out more than 50 thematic applied studies and projects in Estonia and internationally.

Our research focuses on integration policy and Estonia’s Russian-speaking national minority; new immigration and migration policy; citizenship (and statelessness) and citizenship policy; asylum seekers and beneficiaries of international protection; and Estonia’s communities abroad and diaspora policy.

As follow-up projects to studies, we regularly implement interventions aimed at the studied target group. Among other things, we have organised democracy seminars for young people, trained migrant women and exchange students entering the labour market, instructed Estonian school staff on working with migrant children, developed a digital service (a foreigner’s interactive journey for the newly arrived immigrant to Estonia), co-organised and mentored our target group representatives during hackathons, etc.

In the topics of migration and integration, IBS has been a long-standing partner to Estonian public authorities, the private sector and civil society organisations. We have also advised government agencies in other countries on integration policy-related issues, for example in Latvia and Serbia. We are Estonia’s representative in the European Commission’s integration network and portal (EWSI), and a member of the European Migration Network Estonian Contact Point (EMN) and the Estonian Roundtable for Development Cooperation (AKÜ).
